Reading material

I'm just in the middle of rereading the Dune trilogy (the later books don't count). So halfway thru Dune Messiah and I'm already stacking up my next book (beyond Children of Dune of course). I've heard from a couple of people that CandyFreak is worth reading, so I'll give it a shot. Beyond that, I was going thru my past postings here and found a suggestion from WAY back for Richard Russo, the Risk Pool, so that'll be on my short list too. I could also delve into the next books in the Jack Whyte series I started last year. And for some reason, the Asimov books on my shelf are calling to me again, Caves of Steel, Stars Like Dust, and I forget the third in the trilogy now. Deaf Girl once suggested the Penelopiad, which sounded kind of interesting.

There is an interesting quote in Dune Messiah that I was going to post here, but, of course, forgot and left at home. So I'll try to approximate and then come back and re-edit it when I get home. tomorrow (or really late tonight! Party!) (Here it is, in Full)

To endure oneself may be the hardest task in the universe. It's a bitter pill. The greatest palatinate Earl and the lowliest stipindiary serf share the same problem. You cannot hire a mentat or any other intellect to solve it for you. There's no writ of inquest or calling of witnesses to provide answers. No servant - or disciple - can dress the wound. You dress it yourself, or continue bleeding for all to see.

Cool. and true.

As I said, tonight is a party, Opening night. Gonna drink heavily, and try to forget some of the shit that's happening in my life right now. For some reason, George Thorogood's been on the radio a lot recently, twice now, out of the blue, I've heard "When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself!" Good drinking music, so of course, I must oblige.
