the Obligatory

Merry Christmakwanzukkah-al Eid.

"HEY you left out Solstice"

ah, never mind. Happy Thursday.

I'm doing a bit better this Christmas. Not as Scroogelike, as much of a Humbug. But I'm actually trying, 'cause the Wife likes Christmas. Well, not the Christian celebration, but more the traditional 'memory of Christmases past' sort of thing. She's actually more into Solstice. Which is cool with me. I can get more into that than Christmas. Although the big debate now is What Solstice means. Wife, as well as mainstream media and conventional wisdom, says that Solstice is the first day of Winter. I think that, since it's when the days are shortest, and that afterwards, days get longer again, that it's actually MID-winter, half way to spring. She even talked me into letting us open one gift on Solstice night. Maybe we'll do it that way next year, we'll see. The 24th/25th. is such a dead time otherwise, what'll we do, go out for Chinese and a movie?

There are other ways that wife's attitude begins to annoy me. The whole presents thing. Not so much between us, but from others. We don't do much outside gifting. Mostly just parents. Can't really afford to do much else, shipping costs etc. But this year, for the first time, I got a gift from the Director at work, the head of the department. A $25 Barnes and Noble card and a tin of cookies. Kinda cool, and Barnes and Noble is ALWAYS good. Wife started grousing about the size of it. "Hey," I said, "It's $25 more than we had before, and more than we got last year, so don't knock it." She just think I deserve more. Well, hell, who doesn't, but I'd rather see it in my paycheck. Failing that, I'll take what I can get. I'll just get something for me. She can have the shortbreads.

Our big gift to ourselves is a Wii. It's actually turning theraputic. Wife is getting more exercise, and using her arms a lot more than she used to. I almost got her a Wii game for christmas, but decided on DVDs instead. When we bought it, we got the Wii Sports and the Wii Play games. One has the bowling and tennis and baseball, etc, and the other has ping-pong, shooting (reminiscent of the old 'Duck Hunt' but without the dog), cow riding, and billiards. Wife wants the StarWars Light Sabre duels game but I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit first, if that ever happens.

Last night we tried a new dinner: mussels. Turned out pretty good. Even I was impressed. Sautee garlic and onion minces in a pot. Add wine, cream, butter, and the mussels and boil for 15 minutes. Serve with crusty bread. Really nice. Only had one mussel that didn't want to come out to play. Wife thinks this is a new Christmas eve tradition for us.

Anyway, I hope everybody is safe and healthy. And warm, since evidently, Oklahoma is the only place in the country that is NOT snowbound. We're expecting 70 degrees here today. Needless to say, no snow, no ice, just wind.
